MOUNTAIN MAIN
by David Radavich
This staunch mien
with the enormous beard
carved in hickory-wood,
hair spiked as sun,
lords over the garden.
He is older than anything
except certain trees.
Eyes turned downward,
no one can be sure
what he has seen. Even
his mouth is covered
by a deep mustache.
So we can’t know
what the wizard thinks
of this stormy world
wild with wind,
all that remains still
is an artful face
notched and free.
