Let’s try this again.
A little better this time.
Not just Founding Fathers
but also Foundational Mothers,
slaves who escaped and wrote books,
immigrants who arrived
and invented and made homes.
This time more justice
and equality before the law.
This time with care
for each other—the unfortunate,
the forgotten, the suffering.
This time acknowledging
our common dignity and pride,
our beautiful humanness.
A vote for democracy.
Maybe a birthday celebration
with candles for everyone,
bringing joy and light
and a strong national song.
